About passwords

How do you choose your passwords? Most people use very simple schemes and accordingly leave themselves open to crackers. The security expert Roger Grimes maintains that length is your best protection. To prove his point he has issued a challenge and you can read about it here. According to Grimes:

Even if complexity is required, most user passwords aren’t all that hard to guess. Even extreme examples — such as my first challenge password, which is longer and more complex than the average password, isn’t computationally as difficult to crack as longer passwords.

My advice? Realize that eight-character, complex passwords aren’t as tough as you think. Push for longer passwords, complex or not, to gain password strength.
