Transferring your stuff to a new computer

Getting a new computer is nice but re-installing all your settings, programs, and data is a pain. Various programs have been available for helping with the process although none has made the process easy. The best known of this type of software was “Aloha Bob” but Microsoft bought the company and the program disappeared. However, Microsoft has apparently been using the technology that they bought to develop its own tools. According to an article at TechWeb:

Microsoft will unveil a tool to help Windows XP users migrate not only files and settings, but also applications to Windows Vista when the operating system launches, a company worker said. In a blog entry, Anthony Clendenen, a Systems Management Server (SMS) engineer at Microsoft, announced that the “Windows Easy Transfer Companion” will go into public beta when Vista ships in early 2007.

It remains to be seen how well this software works and I am a skeptic until I see the program in action. Transferring from one operating system to another is a pretty complicated process. I will certainly give Microsoft three cheers if they can make this work well.
