Are anti-virus programs on the way out?
I’ve been saying for some time that the present way that we defend our computers from Internet malware isn’t working. (Also see an article, Do We Need a Paradigm Shift in Anti-Virus and Anti-
Spyware Protection?) Security expert Roger Grimes has an article at InfoWorld where he asks, Is the end of anti-virus finally here?
Personally, I believe that anti-virus programs have been oversold by the Symantecs of the world. They are a reactive defense that depends on up-to-date malware definitions, are vulnerable to zero-day attacks, and face an increasingly adroit group of malware writers. Another approach is needed. Grimes concludes
Unfortunately, the landscape has changed, and the prevalence of new, undetectable malware is quickly headed toward a tipping point. If anti-virus vendors don’t take a serious look at the state of their products as compared to the current threats and build a better mousetrap, it’s clear to me that they won’t last another five years.
