Financial software
One widely used category of software is financial. The two big entries here are Quicken from Intuit and Microsoft Money. These are very useful programs for keeping your financial records and doing online banking. They have both, however, started the obnoxious practice of forcing users to buy new versions every few years. Personally, I am not thrilled by having to ditch a perfectly usable piece of software just to fill the coffers of a software company. I am also tired of having to learn a new interface just as I have finally gotten comfortable with the old one. Be that as it may, both Intuit and Microsoft are out with yet another version of their programs. You can read a review by Walter Mossberg or one in PC World.
Both programs work well but I think the edge goes to Intuit’s Quicken. I do wish, however, that Intuit would stop spraying useless icons all over my desktop when I install Quicken. I do not want a loan, a new broker, a new bank, or any of the other things they try to sell. Also beware of Intuit’s attempt to get you to put your financial records on their site. Maybe you trust them to guard your privacy but I certainly do not.
