About Internet Explorer 7
ZDNet has a review of the latest version of IE7. This is a release candidate, which means that it should be feature-complete. The review has a gallery of screenshots. The author summarizes
When it comes down to it, IE7 is a ‘catch-up’ version of Microsoft’s browser - adding tabs and other features that Firefox has had for a while. But IE7 also makes the browsing experience more useful for normal people - e.g. the improved printing support and better toolbar management.
Other comments that I have seen point out that there are some existing Web sites that IE7 does not render properly and it is clear that Microsoft still has not implemented all the CSS standards. Also, the interface has come under criticism. I have only had a brief look at IE7 but I agree with one of the comments on the ZDnet article
The UI really needs work. Some of us still like having a file menu, yet it now appears below the buttons and looks terrible.
It’s also interesting to read an interview with Opera’s Chief Technology Officer, HÃ¥kon Wium Lie. He may not be a totally disinterested party but what he says about Microsoft and standards compliance is true.
HÃ¥kon said in response that Microsoft has a responsibility to follow up on their promises to support CSS 1 and 2 - meaning they need to both implement the standards and also to fix the bugs they’ve introduced. Up till now, HÃ¥kon said, Microsoft’s CSS efforts have been “half-hearted”.
I like his little dig
Microsoft is “doing a paint job on their Pinto”
