Apple makes a big move
By now you have probably heard that Apple has released beta software called “Boot Camp” that allows you to install and run Windows on a Mac. The software will be a regular part of the newest Mac operating system coming out at the end of the year. This is potentially a very important milestone for Apple and is the latest in a series of moves that may well bring the Macintosh computer into the mainstream of personal computing. Macs have always had nicer looking and designed hardware but suffered from the much narrower range of available software (and high prices). Now that the Mac uses the Intel chip instead of the previous proprietary designs, it was only a matter of time before Windows software would be running on a Mac. The time has arrived. Walt Mossberg, who writes on consumer electronics for the Wall Street Journal, has this to say:
For mainstream computer users doing typical tasks, Apple Computer’s Macintosh models have huge advantages over the prevalent Windows computers from companies such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard. The Macs have sleeker hardware designs, a superior operating system, much better built-in software, and virtually no exposure to viruses and spyware. Apple’s flagship model, the iMac, is the best consumer desktop on the market.
After testing the new software, Mossberg says
In Windows mode, the iMac was blazingly fast — far faster than my two-year-old H-P Windows computer. And every function of Windows I tested, including Web browsing, email and music playback, ran flawlessly.
I have never owned or even used a Mac but there may very well be a Mac in my future.
Added later: PC World reports
It works. Impressively well. With games, even. That’s our first impression of Windows XP running under Apple’s Boot Camp on our 20-inch iMac.
