Ditch your phone company?
Anyone who is my age remembers the days when the monolithic Ma Bell controlled most of the telephone communications in the US. AT&T was the local phone service, the long-distance service, and the provider of telephone equipment. Aside from a few local independent companies and one or two slightly bigger mavericks, AT&T was the telephone industry. Now, only the name AT&T is left , subsumed and resurfaced by the fomer SBC. The descendants of Ma Bell continue to lose business to new technologies and the once lucrative long-distance franchise is being gobbled up by the Internet. PC Magazine has an article outlining how to move your telephone service to your computer.
