Increase stability by opening different folder windows in separate processes

In its standard setup, Windows uses the same part of memory (process) for all the folders that you open. When you have a lot of windows open, you may encounter some system instability if one of the folders has a problem. To avoid this possibility, you can change the setting to open new windows in a separate part of memory. Microsoft says

When you open each folder window in a separate part of memory, the stability of Windows can be increased. However, this process uses more memory, and may cause your computer to run more slowly.

Unless you are running with less than 512 MB of RAM or open a whole lot of windows, the extra memory used should not be a problem. One procedure for changing the setting is to open Control Panel-Appearance and Themes-Folder Options. Then choose the “View” tab. Under the list “Advanced Settings” put a check by “Launch folder windows in a separate process”. Click “OK”. You can also reach the setting from the Tools-Folder Options menu of any open folder. Click the “View” tab and proceed as above.
