Support for Windows XP Home Edition expiring?

As of now, Microsoft’s support for Windows XP Home Edition is set to expire on December 31 of this year. If left unchanged, that would mean that anyone wanting support, including security updates, would have to pay starting in 2007. There is precedence, however, for Microsoft extending the support period. Pressure from users convinced them to extend support for Windows 98. Of course, you can’t count on it happening for XP Home.

Since Windows Vista is supposed to come out at about the same time, some might suspect that the desire to sell Vista might influence Microsoft to cut support for XP Home. Personally, I suspect that many XP Home users would not be interested in paying to upgrade to Vista. In fact, many probably have machines that would not have the power to run Vista very well. If Microsoft does stick to the present timetable for ending support, they ought to offer an inexpensive upgrade from XP Home To XP Professional. XP Professional has two additional years of support on the current schedule.
