The difference between Outlook and Outlook Express
Sometimes there is confusion about the two quite different Windows applications Outlook and Outlook Express. Outlook Express is bundled with the operating system and is the default email and newsgroup client. Many PC users use Outlook Express without even being aware of the name of the program since most ISPs use it in their setup. (Of course, AOL is the major exception.) On the other hand, Outlook is part of Microsoft Office and contains functions for managing personal data like appointments as well as for managing email.
Tom Koch frequently writes about these two programs and he has an article that will help clarify the differences between the two. Here is an excerpt:
Outlook and Outlook Express were designed by different programming teams for different audiences with different needs. Outlook Express was developed as part of Internet Explorer with the home user in mind while Outlook was developed as part of Microsoft Office with the corporate user in mind. Outlook Express is a basic Internet mail program that is part of Internet Explorer and Windows. Outlook is a full-featured personal information manager that is available as a part of Microsoft Office and also as a stand-alone program.
